Justification for this webinar/workshop:

In practice, the question is not if but when a client will face injury. This lack of emphasis leaves mental performance consultants, therapists, and medical professionals underprepared to address the psychological, emotional, and social challenges of rehabilitation. Too often, strategies designed for healthy clients are assumed to transfer to injured populations, leading to care that can feel inadequate or even exclusionary. As a professor mentoring aspiring Certified Mental Performance Consultants (CMPCs), I frequently see students and practitioners struggle with this gap. By incorporating specialized training such as a three-hour continuing education webinar/workshop on the psychology of sport injury and rehabilitation, we can answer the call to action for more inclusive, comprehensive, and effective client care (e.g., Esteban Bustamante et al., 2025; Heaney et al., 2015) for clients who acquire an acute or sustained disability impacting their sport performance and/or overall participation.

During this webinar/workshop, we will:

  • Conceptualize an injured client’s case by exploring three foundational injury models, informing the creation of an effective mental skills plan.

  • Understand how diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) impact injured clients during all three phases of the injury process.

  • Design a mental performance intervention plan for clients who sustain injuries either in sport or outside of it, including:

    • Assessments: How to create an assessment plan to inform your mental skills programming.

    • Mental Skills: What skills are most relevant for injured clients, and how these differ from non-injured populations?

    • Application: Hands-on practice in applying these concepts to a case study.

By the end of this webinar/workshop, you will have more:

By the end, you’ll have more:

  • Confidence + Competence: Gain foundational knowledge on how to psychologically support injured clients, enhancing your confidence and competence in this specialized area.

  • Resources, including: A Google Drive folder to support future consulting endeavors that include:

    • Psychology of Sport Injury assessments: a total of 28 assessments ranging from rehabilitation adherence to sport injury anxiety and many concepts in between!

    • Psychology of Sport Injury, peer-reviewed articles: ranging from DEIBJ in Sport Injury articles to specific articles pertaining to performance psychology in sport injury

    • Psychology of Sport Injury, Interdisciplinary Team Resources: Information on how to navigate a relationship, following appropriate HIPAA guidelines, when working with medical professionals such as the client's primary medical team and/or their mental health therapist.
